Upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro: steps and activation help
A Pro key is intended for Windows Pro. Check your installed edition and activation status first, so you can avoid an unnecessary reinstall or a second purchase.
Do I need Windows Pro?
Home covers browsing and many everyday Office tasks. Pro adds features such as joining a business domain and hosting Remote Desktop connections. An Office key does not change your Windows edition.
Before you upgrade
- Open Settings → System → Activation and note the edition and status. Home must be activated for the upgrade described here.
- Back up important files and, where applicable, your BitLocker recovery key. Finish pending updates and connect a laptop to power.
- Use a valid Windows Pro key. If Pro is already installed, troubleshoot its activation instead of repeating an edition upgrade.
Switch from Home to Pro
- Save and close your work.
- Under Settings → System → Activation, select Change next to Change product key.
- Enter your purchased Pro key and follow the prompts. Restart when requested.
- Check that Windows 11 Pro is now shown and that activation has completed.
Error 0xC004F050 or a rejected key
Check that the key matches the intended edition and was copied without extra spaces. Establish whether the error appears during the edition change or when activating an existing Pro installation. This error alone does not prove a key has already been used.
What should I send support?
Include the edition, activation status, exact step and complete error code. A screenshot helps; hide product keys and personal information. Avoid buying another key before the cause is clear.

FAQ
Do I need to reinstall Windows?
A supported edition upgrade normally works without reinstalling. A backup is still recommended.
Will an Office key activate Windows Pro?
No. Windows and Office are separate products and need the appropriate licences.
Does Home need to be activated first?
Yes. The upgrade described here requires an activated Home installation.
