Recover deleted files – how to get the best chance
A deleted file is often not gone straight away: Windows only frees the space. As long as nothing new is written over it, it can often be recovered.
Do this right away
- Check the recycle bin first
- Do not save or install anything on the affected drive
- Install the recovery program on a different drive if possible
How Recuva works
Recuva searches the drive for files whose space has been freed but not yet overwritten and shows the chance of recovery for each. The deep scan even finds traces after formatting.
When it does not work
On SSDs with TRIM enabled, deleted areas are often cleared quickly. Many new writes also lower the chance. It is still worth a try – the sooner the better.
