Slow PC? 7 steps that actually help
A slow PC rarely has just one cause. These seven steps take about half an hour, and most cost nothing.
1. Clean up startup apps
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), tab “Startup”: disable everything that does not need to run at boot. Start-up time often drops noticeably.
2. Free up disk space
When the system drive is nearly full, Windows slows down. Delete temporary files, old updates and browser cache with Windows Disk Cleanup or CCleaner.
3. Update Windows and drivers
Outdated graphics and chipset drivers slow things down. Check Windows Update; update drivers from the manufacturer or with CCleaner Professional’s Driver Updater.
4. Keep programs up to date
Old program versions are slower and less secure. A software updater finds outdated programs automatically.
5. Rein in background programs
Many programs keep running unnoticed. In Task Manager check what constantly uses CPU and memory.
6. Check for malware
Unexplained high load can point to malware. A full scan with an up-to-date antivirus settles it.
7. Maintain regularly
A one-off clean-up helps for a few weeks. Scheduled cleaning, for example in CCleaner Professional, keeps the PC in shape.
